The group moved along the damp coastline. Scarves wrapped tightly and fingers stuffed in pockets and gloves. It was bitterly cold, but the beauty warmed our hearts. The stars were stunning- sparkling diamonds forming the dots of a picture. They came to a river—not exactly the Mississippi, but girls being girls refused to cross. So they turned and went the other way. Excited, they rushed ahead while I lagged behind, half in awe at the wonder, half tired from the week’s events. But mostly, hoping that time would freeze in the perfectness of the moment. The darkness enticed, it enchanted us with the seamless blend of sky and water, so that it seemed we could go on walking along that pitch-black strip all the way to our dreams. And boy were they big dreams.. dreams of hermits and boat houses, with fishes for food and a world where no other humans existed. They sat, allowing their minds to be captivated.
With the taste of salt on their lips and gritty sand crackling in their mouths, He charmed them once again with a silky streak of light that lasted mere seconds. And in the silence, His voice rang clear, “The same hands that created these, created you”. My soul wept with joy, and I knew that this will be a night I won’t forget.
For in the magic of the darkness I was reminded that He was always there, and will always be.

LUTHER'S LUMBER

Luther had been home from the war nearly four months, now, and worked at the Carnation Milk plant in Mt. Vernon where his wife, Jenny, worked.

This morning he was in the little Miller cafe next door to the post office waiting for the mail to be "put up". Sitting across from him in the booth was his old friend, Fred Hill. They were discussing the war which was still going on in the Pacific Theatre. Recruitment posters still lined

the walls of the little cafe.

Fred had not been in the service, because when the war started in 1941, his parents had been in very poor health; his father with a bad heart, and his mother with cancer. He was needed at home to care for them and operate the farm. His parents had since died, and the farm was now his

-- his and Maggie's.

When Luther, Fred's best friend since childhood had flown over Miller in the B-17, and when the bodies of the Hobbs boys and Billie Martin had been shipped home, and when Perry came home with hooks where his hands should have been, Fred felt guilty. He felt he had not done his part for the war effort, and in his own eyes, he was diminished.

But today, it was Luther who seemed depressed. Fred asked him what was bothering him. "You seem down in the dumps, today, Luther," he said. "I can't see what could be botherin' you. You came through the war without a scratch, you got a beautiful wife and a baby on the way, you got a good job, what's the problem?"

"Jenny's mother is in bad shape," said Luther, "We're going to have to take her in, and with the baby coming we don't have the room."
"Can't build a room on?" asked Fred.

"No lumber available," said Luther. "I've tried here, Mt. Vernon, Springfield, Joplin, and there won't be any more shipments for the duration. Who knows how long that will be?"

"Tried Will's sawmill?"

"Yeah, but he just saws oak, and it's green. The baby'll be here in August, and we can't wait for the lumber to dry. Besides, you can't build a whole room out of oak, anyway."

"Wouldn't want to," said Fred, "Reckon the mail's up?"

"Probably."

The two young men left the cafe and went into the post office next door. Buford Patten, the postmaster, had raised the door to the service window, signaling that the mail was in the boxes. Luther and Fred retrieved their mail and left -- Luther to work at Mt. Vernon, and Fred back to the farm.

That evening, Fred finished the milking and sat on the front porch with Maggie. "Days are gettin' longer," he said, "Man could get half a day's work done after five o'clock."

"Better put your Pa's car up," said Maggie, "Radio says rain tonight."

Fred's father had bought a new 1941 Ford just before his first heart attack, and the car was now Freds. He had built a new garage for it just before Christmas, and tonight he congratulated himself on getting it built before the lumber ran out. He didn't even know it had, until Luther told

him this morning.

Fred drove the car into the new garage and latched the door. He walked back around the house to the front porch. Something was nagging at his mind, but he couldn't define it. He shook it off and sat on the porch with Maggie until darkness fell. They could see heat lightning in the West, and the wind started to rise. They went in the house to listen to the news of the war on the radio, and shortly went to bed.

The next morning, Fred again drove his pickup into Miller for the mail. The air was fresh and clear now, the rain having washed it clean. The sun was shining, and he felt good. When he reached the cafe, Luther was there ahead of him.

"Still haven't found any lumber, I guess?"

"No, I asked everybody at work, and nobody knows of any. I don't know what we'll do."

Now the nagging in Fred's mind defined itself. "I found the lumber

for you," he said.

"You did? Where?" Luther was delighted.

"Fella I know. He'll let you have it free, you bein' a veteran and all. He doesn't seem to want you to know who he is, so I'll have to haul it in for you. It's good lumber, fir and pine, cut different lengths and got nails in it, but that's no problem. Tell you what, you get your

foundation poured, and I'll bring you a pickup load everyday and help you build it. We'll have it done before the baby gets here."

"That's a friend for you," Luther said to himself, as he drove to Mt. Vernon. That evening he came home with sacks of cement in his pickup. Luther dug and poured the foundation, and when it was ready for the footings, he told Fred.

"Fine," said Fred, "I'll bring the first load over and be there when you get home from work."

Fred appeared every evening with a load of lumber, and the two men worked until it was too dark to see. Sometimes Maggie came too, and the women sat in the house listening to the radio or talking about babies or Jenny's ailing mother, their sentences punctuated by the sound of the

hammers outside.

Over the next few weeks the new room took shape and was finished and roofed. "Where did you get the shingles?" asked Luther.

"Same fella," answered Fred. "He's got all kinds of stuff."

Luther didn't push. Lots of older folks liked to help out the young veterans anonymously. It was common.

It was done! The women fixed the room up inside, and moved Jenny's mother in. The men went back about their business.

At supper one evening, Luther told Jenny he would like to do something nice for Fred and Maggie, since they had been so helpful with the new room.

"I know," said Jenny, brightly, "Maggie likes those big wooden lawn chairs like Aunt Birdie has in her lawn. Why not get them a couple of those?"

"Good idea," agreed Luther, and the next Saturday he bought a couple at Callison's hardware and loaded them into his pickup.

When he got out to Fred's farm, there was no one home, Fred and Maggie having gone into Springfield, shopping. "That's ok," Luther thought, "I'll just put them in the garage in case it rains."

He drove around the house and into the driveway that led to Fred's new garage.

The garage was gone. Only the foundation remained to show where it had been.

Luther put the chairs on the front porch and drove home, tears in his eyes. The two men are now in their mid-seventies, and are still the best of friends. They never spoke of the incident. How could they?

There was nothing to say.

Dear Lord, thank you for bringing me to this weird place, where I come to realise that I am truly weird and unique. Thank you for the things I have learned, the experiences I have gained. Thank you for skype and msn and telephone, that I can still talk to people who don't know I am weird. Thank you for cute people who still bother talking, nagging and playing piano at me from one million miles away. Thank you for maggi mee, it is very easy to cook. Thank you for making me realise that I am so wonderfully and fearfully made.. that every muscle, every layer of my being has such specific functions I didn't even know before.. Thank you for the postman who doesn't mind that Clayton is such an ulu place, for the pilot who thinks it is an EXCELLENT IDEA to fly pieces of paper across continents. Thank you for reminding me that people are not always what you expect them to be, and everyone is constantly changing. Knowing someone is a lifelong process that never ends.. and I thank you for the excitingness of the people you have put in my life. Thank you for teaching me to trust, for reminding me that I am never alone. Lord, now is a very scary time as you know I am going to take my first exam here tomoro.. it is too exciting for words!! Please help me put it all in perspective, because I know when it's over and I look back on it, I will wonder why in the world I am feeling so scared.. Lord give me strength to handle these few days, and continue to remind me to fix my mind on what is important even as I focus my energy on the coming exam. Ok, thanks for the reminder that this computer is very distracting and I should turn away from it AT ONCE. I love you Lord:) AMEN!!

A Beautiful Flower in a Broken Pot

Our house was directly across the street from the clinic entrance of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to out patients at the clinic. One summer evening as I was fixing supper, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful looking man. "Why, he's hardly taller than my eight-year-old," I thought as I stared at the stooped, shrivelled body. But the appalling thing was his face, lopsided from swelling, red and raw. Yet his voice was pleasant as he said, "Good evening. I've come to see if you've a room for just one night. I came for a treatment this morning from the eastern shore, and there's no bus 'til morning." He told me he'd been hunting for a room since noon but with no success, no one seemed to have a room. "I guess it's my face... I know it looks terrible, but my doctor says with a few more treatments..." For a moment I hesitated, but his next words convinced me: "I could sleep in this rocking chair on the porch. My bus leaves early in the morning." I told him we would find him a bed, but to rest on the porch. I went inside and finished getting supper. When we were ready, I asked the old man if he would join us. "No thank you. I have plenty." And he held up a brown paper bag. When I had finished the dishes, I went out on the porch to talk with him a few minutes. It didn't take a long time to see that this old man had an oversized heart crowded into that tiny body. He told me he fished for a living to support his daughter, her five children, and her husband, who was hopelessly crippled from a back injury. He didn't tell it by way of complaint; in fact, every other sentence was preface with a thanks to God for a blessing. He was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease , which was apparently a form of skin cancer. He thanked God for giving him the strength to keep going. At bedtime, we put a camp cot in the children's room for him. When I got up in the morning, the bed linens were neatly folded and the little man was out on the porch. He refused breakfast, but just before he left for his bus, haltingly, as if asking a great favour, he said, Could I please come back and stay the next time I have a treatment? I won't put you out a bit. I can sleep fine in a chair." He paused a moment and then added, "Your children made me feel at home. Grownups are bothered by my face, but children don't seem to mind." I told him he was welcome to come again. And on his next trip he arrived a little after seven in the morning. As a gift, he brought a big fish and a quart of the largest oysters I had ever seen. He said he had shucked them that morning before he left so that they'd be nice and fresh. I knew his bus left at 4:00 a.m. and I wondered what time he had to get up in order to do this for us. In the years he came to stay overnight with us there was never a time that he did not bring us fish or oysters or vegetables from his garden. Other times we received packages in the mail, always by special delivery; fish and oysters packed in a box of fresh young spinach or kale, every leaf carefully washed. Knowing that he must walk three miles to mail these, and knowing how little money he had made the gifts doubly precious. When I received these little remembrances, I often thought of a comment our next-door neighbour made after he left that first morning. "Did you keep that awful looking man last night? I turned him away! You can lose roomers by putting up such people!" Maybe we did lose roomers once or twice. But oh! If only they could have known him, perhaps their illness' would have been easier to bear. I know our family always will be grateful to have known him; from him we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude to God. Recently I was visiting a friend who has a greenhouse, As she showed me her flowers, we came to the most beautiful one of all, a golden chrysanthemum, bursting with blooms. But to my great surprise, it was growing in an old dented, rusty bucket. I thought to myself, "If this were my plant, I'd put it in the loveliest container I had!" My friend changed my mind. "I ran short of pots," she explained, and knowing how beautiful this one would be, I thought it wouldn't mind starting out in this old pail. It's just for a little while, till I can put it out in the garden." She must have wondered why I laughed so delightedly, but I was imagining just such a scene in heaven. "Here's an especially beautiful one," God might have said when he came to the soul of the sweet old fisherman. "He won't mind starting in this small body." All this happened long ago -- and now, in God's garden, how tall this lovely soul must stand. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7b)

like refining silVEr

Malachi 3:3 says: 'He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.'

This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God.

One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study.

That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining Silver.

As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot;
then she thought again about the verse that says: 'He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver.'
She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time.

The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.
The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, 'How do you know when the silver is fully refined?'

He smiled at her and answered,
'Oh, that's easy -- when I see my image in it.'

If today you are feeling the heat of the fire , remember that God has his eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you.

The most beautiful scarf in the world, and the lessons learnt:

- Patience: Jesus didn’t take the easy way out, He listened to His Father and obeyed His will to die on the cross then resurrected.

- Imperfections: sometimes things don’t go right and cause you to redo/ carry on. But at the end point when the product is completed, all looks right. God’s purpose is the end-point. Work towards it and when you look back to look at the past, you know you’velived a fruitful life!

Thanks a lot for this lovely scarf, and for using it to remind me of God’s love and warmth for me, and ALL I HAVE TO DO IS TRUST!

I will cherish this friendship always. From the bottom of my heart=D

a lesson on gifts

This year, I realised the perfect and most precious gift.

I heard it in the late night phone calls.

I saw it in the eyes of a brother who asked me to accompany him on results day.

I tasted it in homemade cheesecake of my supposed favourite flavor=D

I felt it in the warmth of various surprises.

I found it in the constant naggings and reminders to do the things I already planned to do:)

I knew it in my heart when the same hands which made these wonderful people touched my heart and reminded me that He loves me so much more.

Thank you Lord, for loving me and teaching me that the greatest gift of all is love.

And to YOU who is reading this now,
I LOVE YOU!!
Thank you for blessing me this year:)

Christian the Lion

WHEE!! i found this really touching video on metacafe.. ermxx which was koped from youtube.. haha but that's not the point.. anw, it's about these two friends who bought and reared a cub in 1969. They named him Christian, and he was only 35pounds.

Very soon, Christian grew too big, Rendall and Berg realized they couldn't keep him much longer. The two decided to release Chritian back ino the wild. Christian was realeased into a conservation system Africa.

In 1974, Rendall and Berg decided to visit Christian one last time despite being warned that it was impossible that Christian would remember them.

The two friends flew to Kenya, anyway. When they finally arrived at the reservation, ...haha! you can guess what happens!! awww it's very cryable and awwable!!!! KEEP on CRYING!!

Whee!! and to YOU who's reading this now, I would like to say that I love You!! sorry if I don't say it often enough;( BUT I STILL LOVE YOU!!!!

Fun, Food and Water @ Daron's!

Yesterday- 081025 totally rocks!! Haha.. Sec2e2 outing=D

530pm( Kovan Mrt): met up with Terry, Pu Kuang, Koon Liang. Begun a 1h( well not so long la) hike to Daron’s hse at Kang Choo Bin Road. Pu Kuang kept insisting every mansion like hse we passed was his hse. And we were pretty lost and noisy, until some lady got so fed up she actually went out of her house to ask us where we were going. Haha.. and then we saw Daron’s dad in the distance and he looks so much like daron I shouted “Hi, Daron!” across the whole street!! ARGHHH!!

630pm: arrived at the house=D Everyone sort of arrived soon after, in Raymond’s car! Haha.. take car still slower than us.. Then the guys played pool while the girls (3 of us only!) prepared the fire. Ahh.. they have the common sense to realise that was sort of un-gentlemanly.. so everyone cook and everyone play wih fire.. until all the hotdogs got burnt.. and all the dory fish( specially prepared by tan jin.. woa impressive!) disappeared before reaching the table! Haha.. cos tan jin went around feeding us and promoting his ‘fish’..lol..

Then eat, and eat…. And go watch football?!!!! Aiyo! Some everton against man utd. And I did’nt even understand what was going on. So after 20 mins I went “ so what colour is Manchester ar?” And I nearly got WhacKed.. Haha! I really dunno ma.. woa.. so I help to peel the prawns.. 10mins per prawn.. until Raymond complained that ‘jayne.. why you peel prawn so slow…’ then hold PRWAN PEELING WORKSHOP for me lor!!! My goodness.. haha.. then hor we peel prawns 1h they eat prawns 1min!! =(

And thank goodness the match ended..

910pm: tour daron’s hse!! Tan Jin “ you all want to tour ar.. must take bus leh..”

930pm: decides to play some card games.. finally settled on Indian poker so tt everyone can play.

Game: everyone picks a random card and holds it to the forehead w/o looking at it. Try to convince other ppl to change card with one from the pile. The one who holds the lowest card has to do a FORFEIT! And max can swap twice.

First forfeit: KOON LIANG! And he got a pic taken of 2 burnt sausages in his mouth!

The forfeits kept increasing.. until the last round- was 2sausages +3 crabsticks in the mouth.. *sausages are burnt while crabsticks are pretty much raw.. Yu Feng picked 2diamonds at first.. got lucky and decided to swap.. and picked 3spades! Haha.. and was convinced somehow to swap(AGAIN), and picked 3Clubs!! Whoopsie.. then no more swapping, so had to stuff all into her mouth! poor girl..

11pm: Gaffar and Yu Feng left, Ray went to get cable.. to watch movie?!!!
and we changed game. Beer game!.. was supposed to play with beer, but we used water instead.
Game: everyone takes turn to flip a card, and on it will tell you the no. of drinks. Then you pick someone to ‘perform’ the card. variations: kiss someone, social, category, and blackout! *no toilets allowed!

Poor marcus drank around 30 plus cups of water, while the rest of us drank ard 5 cups..

It was all good fun thou.. and everyone just had a great time linking up their lives with the game.. like marcus was a medic in ns, so was saboed with all sorts of excuses: ‘medic everyday ask us drink water one hor?’, ‘water very healthy one’, ‘drink up!(said in some NS-y tone’, ‘drink so slw, drink somemore la!’ until it became.. ‘since you drink so much alr, justdrink 2 more cups!’)…

1230am: pool kings: Ray and Daron played one last game before we left.. Thanks for your hse daron! The guys wanted to go chomp chomp to eat, then go play mahjong.. so half of them went first in daron’s car.. then Raymond fetched me and Carolyn home first.. In the car.. we were saying how good it was that we all stayed close to each other..(aha! A benefit only sec school friends enjoy=D) and how everyone has grown up since sec1.. now can drive somemore! (Woa.. seeing my sec1 friend drive is EYE-OPENING!!! Haha..) then soon cls outing is go attend wedding le.. lol..

Arghh and I managed to give Raymond the wrong directions.. but he somehow found my hse.. Whee!! It was alr nearing 2am when I reached home!!! Anw, E2 RAWKSSS!!!!

The sky was a patch of pure crisp white against a bright, piercing blue. Hypnotic, the timeless arrival of the waves, rising from the blue-green sea and disappearing against the shimmering white expanse of the shoreline in a stream of foam and a gradual, fading, 'whoosh'.
Away from the crowd where few bother to look anymore at a miracle that happens everyday.

Listen. Watch. Breathe.

2 people sat in awe at the unfolding miracle. Twilight entered shyly, marked by the slight red tinge along the edges of pure white. The blue lost its' piercing brightness, darkening into a faint lavender. The blush spread,the edges lost its crispness. The colours swirled. Red darkened to orange. Lavender, to a deep rich purple. Still the swirling continued. The colours were shimmering now, but they stayed only for a moment. For the swirling was incessant, and by the time the camera has been set, it would have changed. So, put away the camera.

Listen. Watch. Breathe.
Enjoy the change.

As the swirling continues, purple is shadowed into indigo and one last swirl sweeps the whole sky into a blanket of black.
But the darkness does not last long, as the swirling made its presence known even in the absorbing black vacuum. Bit by bit, light dotted the black sky, its twinkling diffusing through the night.

As I sat there breathing in the deliciously cool, salty air, I realised the secret of miracles.
Listen, Watch and Breathe. EXPERIENCE it yourself.

For a picture can capture a sunset, but it cannot capture the beauty of a sunset.
And a paragraph can describe an experience, but it cannot describe the miracle of that experience.

when there was no planned time

Sunday is my favourite day of the week. This has been so since young, and is even more apparent now. Pre-teen Jayne loved the handicrafts during Sunday school, and the promise of a large array of sweets and candies.

As a student, I looked forward to the break Sundays brought me from the mundane life of books and papers. Church gave me lifelong friends, brothers and sisters with whom I could share my deepest thoughts. Fun and laughter were the norm, sadness and heartache had no place in this sacred place. Or so I thought, at that time. Now, my Sundays were packed one after the other, with church activities.

Yesterday was Sunday. I had good fun as an assistant Sunday school group leader, bringing my group through a game of bible study. (Oh the irony. I just realised). Next was service. It was our band's turn to play during worship. Haha, I always enjoy playing the piano and listening to the congregation sing. It's smile-inducing=) Lunch followed, then tuanqi(fellowship). It was big group activity, where we had a time of 'speed-sharing'. Much like speed-dating, we went round 'exchanging partners', and answering some not-so-random questions to each other. Interesting way to realise that there's so much I don't know about the people I've been with my whole life. Just before the intensity of the whole self-realisation thing overwhelmed us (haha!), Ze Li ended the session with us playing a good game of sitting captain's ball.

The best part of the day came after tuanqi, when everyone just disappeared from the room (within 15mins!). Perhaps it was late(5.30 pm after all, and it HAD been a long day) and everyone was tired. Or maybe it has come to a point where people are just so used to scheduled time and planned activities, they don't know anymore how to enjoy the company of others without someone in charge of the time. Mingling without an agenda becomes a waste of time, unnatural.

And so, I was left in the room with Yu Jing, who had an hour to kill. And in that hour, I suddenly felt like a kid again. We talked about absolutely nothing. Well, not exactly nothing. The conversation ranged from setting up a business, to the oxymoron known as technology, sermons, and ended with the conclusion that 'isit' is part of the English language. And we used mahjong paper left from morning's bible study to attempt folding a star. Which failed, and ended up being a gun instead. We were becoming high, posing around the room with the 'gun', and snapping pictures of ourselves from under a row of stacks of chairs.

To sum it all up, we had a great time without planning any of it.
That's carefree timelessness for you-time well spent indeed!(And that would be right=))

Standing up

I helped my dad out at the Stephen Tong gospel rally today, doing 'security'. The job scope was simple. Stand for most of the praise and worship, try to look out for suspicious behaviour, which was highly improbable.
It felt a little weird being the only one standing in that section after the speaker told us to sit for the song presentation. You know, the feeling that since you're the odd one out, it might be the wrong thing to do. My good friend was beside me, and insisted I sit down. She pointed to some empty sections where other orange-shirt 'security' people were already seated, and prompted me to follow suit. I readily sat down beside her, grateful for an excuse to get out of that awkward position.
I couldn't help thinking about how I should have stood up, because I knew it was what I was supposed to do. Well, it isn't such a big deal right?
...Wrong! How often these little things reflect our behaviour when faced with the big stuff. I always thought I could stand up for the things I believed in. Be different, be strong. All it took was a little persuasion, and I crumbled.
As I sat there in silent contemplation of my weakness, I recalled a bible study passage from a few days ago, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." (Matthew 19)
What was I doing, trying to be strong by myself?! Hilarious stuff. Somtimes, at some point, I feel like I am in charge of my own actions. I can handle it. That's when God shows me through the smallest thing, how weak I really am, without Him.
And so before the rally even started, God taught me a personal lesson.
